Retail investing and crypto communities, across a wide spread of boards. Deep-dive research sits next to hype, conviction and the occasional meme, often in the same thread.
01 · Eleven of themSentiment platforms
These are places where people say what they think. Each one is scored on its own terms and calibrated against its own normal, because one community runs euphoric, another is structurally sceptical, and the news reads flat. Averaging them would produce a number that is arithmetically correct and practically meaningless, so we never do it. When two of them disagree about the same company, the disagreement is the finding. See How we measure.
Breadth here is not about making the totals larger. It exists so that one room can be compared against another.
Bluesky
SocialThe open social network where much of the finance and crypto crowd that used to post on X now posts instead.
StockTwits
Trading socialThe trading-focused social platform. Cashtag chatter, and unusually, users attach their own bullish or bearish label, which gives us a human baseline to check our scoring against.
YouTube
VideoFinance creators, an institutional and retail mix. We read the video titles, the comment sections, and the spoken analysis itself through transcripts.
Hacker News
Tech forumA technical, analytical crowd with sharp and sceptical takes on tech equities and crypto. Small in volume, distinctive in tone, and frequently the first to be unconvinced.
Earnings calls
Company disclosureQuarterly earnings-call transcripts: management's own words and the analyst Q&A. The highest-signal text we hold, fetched for companies that have just reported.
Financial news
News · RSSHeadlines from the major financial outlets, taken straight from their own feeds.
News aggregation
News aggregatorHeadlines gathered from thousands of outlets and searched across finance topics. The broadest single net we cast.
Curated market news
News · curatedA market-news feed pre-mapped to tickers with relevance scoring, which gives broad daily coverage without us having to infer the subject.
Ticker-tagged news wire
News · ticker-taggedA stock-news wire where every story arrives already tagged to a company, covering hundreds of tickers a night. Useful breadth, and the source where we found that a large share of “bearish” items were law-firm advertising rather than news.
Global news database
Global newsWorldwide news in many languages, reaching well beyond US outlets. It exists so that a US-listed company with a European or Asian story does not read as quiet to us.
02 · Ten of themSignal lenses
These are records of what happened rather than opinions about it. Filings, disclosures, scheduled releases and market context. None of them is ever sentiment-scored, because scoring a fact for mood is a category error that makes the output look richer and mean less. They sit beside the sentiment reads, never inside them.
Insider transactions
Official filingsWhat company officers, directors and 10% owners actually bought and sold with their own money. We keep only open-market purchases and sales. Grants, option exercises and tax withholding are mechanical and are excluded, because they are not decisions.
Material events
Official filingsThe events a public company must report within days: earnings releases, executive and board changes, mergers, material agreements, impairments. Tagged by standard item code and shown as a timeline per instrument. A record of what happened, never sentiment-scored.
Ownership stakes
13D / 13GWhen an investor crosses 5% of a company they must file. A 13D declares activist intent and they may push for board seats or a sale; a 13G is passive and usually an index fund. We keep the two apart, because only one of them says something is about to happen.
Analyst rating changes
Street actionsWhen a broker actually changes its call: upgrades, downgrades and new coverage, with the firm and the old and new rating. Reiterations are counted but not listed, because they are the large majority of all actions and would bury the real moves.
Congressional trades
Public disclosuresTrades disclosed by members of the US Senate and House. Filers have 45 days to report and are often later, so this is a record of what became public, not a live trading feed. Amounts are the official reported ranges and never exact values.
New listings
IPO calendarCompanies scheduled to come to market and those that just arrived. It also tells us when a newly listed company is not yet in our instrument universe, so we know what we are not listening to instead of finding out weeks later.
Economic calendar
Macro releasesScheduled economic data: inflation, jobs, growth, central-bank decisions, with the estimate and what actually printed. When every instrument moves the same way on the same day, the reason is usually here rather than anything about a single company.
Interest rates
Yield curveThe US Treasury yield curve, the rate backdrop every instrument is priced against. Shown beside the mood gauges as market context, never as a forecast.
Market mood gauges
IndexMarket-wide fear and greed readings for equities and for crypto, on a 0 to 100 scale. A macro backdrop for the per-instrument reads, and never blended into platform sentiment.
Attention
Buzz proxyDaily encyclopedia pageviews, a proxy for how much the public is looking a name up. A signal of interest volume, not mood. It says nothing about bullish or bearish, and we are careful not to let it pretend otherwise.
What we don't list, and why
We name the platforms people can go and read for themselves. We do not publish the specific communities we poll, the individual feeds behind each source, or the commercial providers some of this arrives through. That detail is operational rather than informative, and listing it would tell you nothing about the quality of a reading.
What does matter is already on this page: what each source is, what it is good at, and where it is weak. If a source goes dark or starts returning material that is not what it claims to be, that is a problem we write about. Several of the notes on Notes are exactly that.
One more is coming.
